Derby was founded by John H. Derby in 1892 as a small town on the banks of the Kansas River. The town quickly became a center for farming and ranching, and by 1910 it had more than 4,000 residents. Derby's economy changed dramatically when oil production began to grow in nearby Wichita in 1907. With new jobs and money flowing into the town, people started buying bicycles, cars, and other new things. By 1915, Derby had become one of the largest cities in Kansas. Derby's growth stopped after World War I because there was no market for goods produced by farmers in wartime America. However, the city continued to grow until its population peaked at over 30,000 in 1930. During this time, it also became one of the most important cultural centers in western Kansas; many famous people lived and worked here including James Baldwin (1924-2008), Orson Welles (1894-1982), Woody Allen (1925-2018), Bob Hope (1920-2018), Franklin D Roosevelt (1912-1945), Neil Armstrong (1927-2012). The city's decline began during World War II because of its proximity to Japanese forces during World War II and then its reliance on agriculture for economic support following the war. This caused some of Derby's businesses to close or go out of business while others were relocated or abandoned altogether due to competition from other cities with larger economies. In 1957, however, the city achieved national recognition when it hosted The Beatles' first U2 concert at Municipal Stadium; this event helped revive downtown derby as a popular tourist destination again. In recent years derby has experienced a resurgence as an important cultural center within western Kansas; it has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Derby, Kansas is a small town in the US state of Kansas. It is located on the border of Clay County and Garfield County. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. Derby is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The first settlers in what would become Derby were ranch hands who came from New Mexico in 1867. They started a post office in 1868 and named it Derby after their home town of Derby, England. A store was built in 1870 and a post office was opened in 1872. In 1908, the community had 7 residents and a one-room schoolhouse serving grades K-8. On February 9, 1917, an attack by German soldiers resulted in the death of fifteen people and twenty-four injuries when bombs exploded near the local railroad station. In 1951, all but two members of Derby's school board resigned due to financial difficulties caused by oil production within nearby Wichita Falls. That year also saw the founding of Wichita State University located thirty miles east at Shawnee Mission Community College (now Shawnee State University). The new university relocated its main campus to downtown Wichita in 1960 following years of planning and fundraising led by Mayor David Boren (D). In 1970, voters approved a $1 million bond issue for infrastructure projects including replacement of aging roads with new ones as well as additions to public parks and sidewalks throughout derby. The issue also established derby'shood status with city hall as its governing body replacing county commissioners since they could not meet regularly enough to make decisions on important issues affecting derby residents or businesses . By 2000, more than half a century had passed since that initial bond election and much has changed - including annexation by Wichita city government which occurred that same year following approval from then City Manager Don Wittman Since then tagattitude has been slowly building up over time resulting finally today’s current situation where derbyites have taken matters into their own hands via referenda organized through citizen activism group called Addendum

Derby, Kansas is a town in Stephens County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,878 at the 2010 census. Derby is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The first settlers in what is now Derby were two families who arrived on the Buffalo Trace wagon trail from Illinois in 1854. They built a small log cabin and started trading with Indians along the route. The first post office was established in 1855, and by 1860 there were six stores and twenty-four residents. A school was organized in 1861 and became a public school district in 1868. The first courthouse was also built that year; it served as the county seat until 1907 when Wichita took over that role. The post office changed its name to Derby in 1870 and remained so until 1975. The town site was laid out by George Hargrave and others around 1865; it became the official municipality of Stephens County on July 1, 1889. At one time there were over 100 businesses in Derby; however, most have since closed or been replaced by larger malls or other forms of commercial development which have taken away much of the community's history and character
