Derby was founded in 1867 by the Chouteau brothers. The town was originally a small, agricultural community and was primarily used for agriculture. In the early 1900s, the town began to become involved in manufacturing and became known as a center of production for firearms. During World War II, Derby produced munitions for the US military. Today, Derby is a small city with a population of around 508 residents. It is home to several businesses including a gun shop and ammunition store. The city also has a recreation department which hosts events such as target shooting and deer hunting tournaments. derby harbor boasts three bridges which connect it to other communities in rural Kansas: Joplin, Newtonville and Overland Park.

Derby, Kansas is a small town in Marshall County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,594 at the 2010 census. Derby is located on the banks of the Arkansas River. The first settlers of Derby were James and Martha Purdy who arrived in 1847. They named their new settlement for Derby England, England's second most important city after London. In 1851, they built a log cabin on what is now Main Street. The Purdys served as postmasters of Derby from 1852 to 1860 and again from 1865 to 1870. In 1898, the railroad came through Derby and started train service between Wichita and Liberal which stopped at different stations in the town until 1925 when it connected with the Kansas City Southern Railroad at Liberal. After that date, only freight service was available until 1978 when a branch line was built east to Fort Washburn so that customers could access water resources there. On October 11th, 2006 an EF-4 tornado touched down just south of Derby near milepost 622 on US 281/US 283 making it one of only two Tornado touchdowns in Ulysses S Grant Park history! Unfortunately no injuries or damage occurred but several power lines were knocked out causing some brief power outages throughout town (see below).

In 1847, George Washington Carver used his rifle to shoot eight farmers near Lexington KY during a robbery attempt. Carver was acquitted of all charges following a trial that lasted three days. This event is also recognized as the first known instance where firearms were used in self-defense outside of hunting or target shooting situations. Since then, there have been countless examples where individuals have used their firearms to defend themselves from attackers or protect others from harm. Some well-known cases include the shootings of Michael Brown in Ferguson MO & Eric Garner in New York City; both instances resulting in tragic outcomes for those involved (e.g., Michael Brown killed by police while Eric Garner died after being placed in handcuffs). In each case, firearm use played a critical role in ending the violence before it could become too much more serious.

In January 1939, Derby merged into Salina which had a larger population and larger budget resulting in a smaller number of residents within the town limits. By 1951, only 50 residents remained within Derby boundaries making it an evacuation center during the Korean War era. Today, there is still a small amount of community spirit throughout Derby as many residents are still involved with local businesses and organizations such as The Salvation Army or Kiwanis Club.
