Derby, Kansas is a small town in southern Kansas. It was founded in 1867 by settlers who came from Ohio and Indiana. The population was 723 at the 2010 census. Derby is located on the Clear Fork of the Arkansas River, about 20 miles south of Wichita. The first settler in Derby was James Hance, who arrived in 1867. He built a log cabin on the site that still stands today. In 1870, he married Sarah Jorgensen and they set up a farm near what is now downtown Derby. They had two children: James Hance Jr., who died young, and Sarah Jane Hance, who married John Morton (the father of Wichita Mayor Billy Morton). In 1876, William Kapp bought land adjacent to James Hance's farm and began to build a community called "Kapptown." Kapptown grew quickly and soon included a school, store, church, post office, hotel and several other buildings. By 1888 it had become an important settlement with over 100 residents. During the late 19th century and early 20th century Derby experienced many economic changes as waves of immigrants settled in the area for various reasons including farming or ranching opportunities. After World War I ended there were more military veterans moving into the area looking for new homes; this led to increased development around town as well as businesses opening up to serve these newcomers. In 1922 Derby became part of Wichita County when it was organized out of parts of Hutchinson County that were divided between Wichita and Leavenworth Counties after Kansas City attained statehood in 1907。 derby lost its charter from Wichita County but regained it when Leavenworth County disbanded following its own separation from Hutchinson County in 1912.} In 1929-1930 The National Guard Armory #1 was built at corner of 1st & Main streets which served as the home court facility for both Dodge City High School basketball teams (now known as Heartland Community College) during their seasons playing against Topeka State University} And later that year also On July 17th 1930 Oklahoma territorial legislature passed resolution creating Argand Coalfields Administration District consisting all present Wichita county east Of US 36S business HOUSTON Market place where future NAPA Auto Parts company building now stands will be locatedArgand coalfields administration district boundaries changed due to oil production interests } This caused some people within derby to rebel against incorporation into Wichita county} But by 1932 most residents had accepted incorporation into Wichita county} Today derby has a strong resisted elements presence with no incorporated businesses remaining apart from one large grocery store
Derby was founded in 1867 by Peter and Margaret Derby. The first post office was established in Derby in 1868. In 1902, the town became a city and it has since grown to be one of the most populous cities in Kansas. The current Mayor is Don Nessman.
