A blacksmith shop also operated from 1886-1892 which produced horse power for local farmers In 1898 an addition to the original store building housed a school that began serving students from kindergarten through eighth grade on October 1st In 1908 when the Wichita public library opened it became one of only four libraries west of Chicago that were not Carnegie funded . The first female librarian served as Miss Frances Ewing from 1912-1914 In 1917 when city limits were set off along Harrison Street east of First Avenue they annexed much of rural Haskell County including parts of today’s Derby By 1922 there were about 100 residents living in what would become Derby with just three stores and one school
