Derby, Kansas is a small town in south-central Kansas that is the county seat of Stanton County. The population was 1,827 as of the 2010 census. Derby is located on the Missouri River at its confluence with the Arkansas River. It lies about 120 miles (190 kilometers) east of Wichita and 100 miles (160 kilometers) west of Topeka. The first permanent settler in Derby was David Starr Hill, who arrived in 1854. He founded a sawmill and gristmill on the river and also developed a large acreage near present-day Derby for growing corn and other crops. In 1856, John Aitken settled in what is now Derby; he built a dam across the Arkansas River to provide power for his new mill. Aitken became one of the most successful early farmers in this area. In 1861, John Pemberton came to Derby from Topeka to establish an agricultural settlement along what is now Elm Street; he organized a Methodist Church there and named it after his family's home state, Kentucky. Pemberton became one of the most successful farmers in this area as well; his farmstead still stands today on Elm Street just north of downtown Derby. In 1865, Edwin Trueblood established Trueblood & Company mercantile storenear present-day Main Street in downtown Derby; Trueblood was one of the first merchants to open shop in this area back when derby was primarily an agricultural community. By 1870, more than 150 people lived in derby; many were farmers or entrepreneurs who had moved here from surrounding counties during that period of rapid growth throughout southern Kansas Territory related to railroad construction and development within Kansas State University' s new campus at Dodge City . By 1920, only 3 percent of residents remained self-employed while 95 percent were employed by some other economic sector outside their homes - jobs that have thrived into our current day!
