Derby, Kansas is a small town in the US state of Kansas. The population was 1,381 at the 2010 census. Derby is located in Kiowa County on the border of Sedgwick and Douglas counties. It has a humid continental climate with hotsummer days and cold winter nights. The official name of the town is Derby, but it also refers to the nearby mountain range which forms part of its boundaries. The area that now makes up Derby was first settled by German Americans in 1854. There were several schools and churches established in this area before 1881 when Read County was created from parts of Kiowa and Sedgwick Counties. In that year, a post office called "Derby" was opened in what is now the heart of Derby Township. By 1892, all activity within the township had stopped because there wasn't enough water to support people or animals due to bad soil conditions caused by an overuse of irrigation water for farming purposes only! However, things began to change after 1907 when derrick & co Mines (now Energy Transfer Partners) came into operation with their new oil well near present day Wichita Falls shopping center. This led to extensive development around town including many new homes and businesses as well as an increase in population! After World War II, most everyone left Derby for good except for a few who continued to live here until they moved away during or after the late 1960s when oil prices started declining nationally due to OPEC's production hikes! Today, much like it did many years ago, Derby retains its small town feel with some residents still deeply involved in their community affairs while others have scattered themselves throughout various urban areas nearby!

Derby, Kansas is a small town located in Riley County, Kansas. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. Derby was founded in 1881 by William and Mary Derby. It is the only city in Riley County. The post office has been in operation since 1881. The first settler to arrive in what is now Derby was John Gentry on July 4, 1881. Gentry came with his family from Illinois and set up a cabin on the edge of town. He and his wife had six children, four of whom lived to adulthood and two who died young. In 1902, George Fenton moved into Derby from Topeka and opened a grocery store earning $25 per week. By 1907 there were sixteen businesses operating in Derby- ten groceries, four restaurants, three saloons, one laundry and one blacksmith shop. In 1922 the first telephone line went into service in Derby when Eddy Wiegand connected with Topeka for phone service between derby and Topeka City Hall for $2 per month (this was before cable). In 1925 the first oil well was drilled in what is now downtown derby by J C White & Sons Oil Company but it never produced any gas or oil because there were no pipelines then available to transport these products vast distances! In 1935 an electriclight plant started production Downtown by Hargrave Electric Light Company but this company also failed within just a few years due to financial difficulties! In 1941 local resident Verna Higginbotham began growing corn on her farmstead which she continued until 1997 when all of her land reverted back to state ownership following passage of the Agricultural Reform Act of 1949! One year later that same year county officials purchased Higginbotham's land which continues to produce corn every year today! A number of other businesses have come and gone over the years including: A&P Supermarket (1984–1996), KFC (1997–2005), Sears (2006–present), Rabobank (2007–2009) as well as numerous churches including First Baptist Church which has been around since 1865! Today there are five schools within walking distance of Downtown- three public schools and two private schools! There are also several businesses that offer services such as plumbing/homesitters/etc.: Pritchett’s Market Grocery(1988–1998), Western Union(1991–1994), Ford’s Auto Body Shop(1995-2004), etc.). Overall it can be said that Downtown derby has seen many changes over time yet remains very active - serving as both a commercial center for business owners as well as being home to some great restaurants/bars/cafés along with plenty of retail space for residents!
Derby, Kansas was founded by the United States in 1836. The town became a center for agriculture and cattle ranching. In the early 1870s, Derby developed as a railroad town, with two lines running through the town. The first line connected Derby to Topeka and Wichita; the second line connected Derby to St. Louis.
