Derby is a small city in Shawnee County, Kansas, United States. The population was 915 at the 2000 census. Derby was founded in 1854 as a town on the west bank of the Arkansas River. The name was changed to Derby in 1870 and to its current form in 1887 when it became part of Shawnee County. It is one of three cities within Shawnee County (the other two are Topeka and Wichita). The first settlers in Derby were those who came overland from Missouri in 1854. They built their homes along the banks of the Arkansas River. The first post office was established at Derby on July 7, 1855, under the name of "Hutchinson." On February 24, 1857, an act was passed by the Territorial Congress designating what is now Shawnee County as part of Kansas Territory. This act placed Derby within newly created Shawnee County. On May 6, 1857, Derbyshire's first schoolhouse was erected near present-day First National Bank Building on Railroad Avenue. Derbyshire became a town on November 1, 1870 when it joined with nearby Topeka to form the new county seat of Shawnee County. On December 15, 1888, an act was passed by the Territorial Congress recognizing that Topeka had become too populous and desirable for its own government and establishing a Board of Commissioners to governTopeka municipal government separate from that of Kansas City proper; this board continued until 1907 when it merged into Kansas City proper as did all local governments within Oklahoma Territory except for that for derby which continued under its own board until 1912 when they were absorbed into Topeka proper again. On January 1, 1907 topekan officials moved all government functions from Topeka to downtown KCP so that Derbyshire could no longer be effectively served by either side while maintaining contact with both municipalities through various channels including mail service (until mail service ceased altogether due to World War I). Today there are still some remnants left behind from early Derbyshire days such as: The Hutchinson House Museum which still stands today next door to First National Bank building whereDerby's first schoolhouse stood; numerous Indian graves located around town; and much more!
