Derby, Kansas is a town located in the Topeka- Shawnee County area of central Kansas. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. Derby's history dates back to 1881 when it was part of the Leavenworth Territory. The first gun hammer was built in Derby by H.J.Monson and Wm. Bartlett in 1882. It was a two-handled tool used to sharpen firearms and Haas Bros., a local grocery store owner, supplied the hammers for use by his employees. In 1907, local businessman/gunsmith Averill Harriman donated a hammer to be used at the Western Federation of Miners meeting in Topeka; this donation formed the basis for Derby's Gun Hammer Museum which opened in 1911. The gun hammer eventually replaced an earlier type of sharpening stone called an "envelope hone." The envelope hone had been designed by civil engineer George Stephenson and patented on November 10, 1871; it consisted of three small circles that were glued together around a core made out of hardwood or other wood with a circular edge that could be sharpened on one side only (the sharp end). Envelope hones were originally used by leatherworkers before they became popular among gunsmiths as well. When electric sharpeners became available in the early 1920s, envelope hones finally fell out of use and were replaced by modern electric sharpeners until they were discontinued altogether in 1957. In 1924, Derby attracted attention when Mayor Joplin announced he would spend $1 million dollars to improve civic amenities such as roads and schools while also funding research into new ways to prevent crime; this announcement represented an important turning point for Derby because it helped spur development which has kept the town bustling ever since. By 1938, Derby had over 50 businesses including several amusement park rides and theatres along with its own movie theater (the Derby Fair). In 1948, mayor Ritchie created the city government elected body known as City Council which served as lieu thereof for all municipal purposes including zoning regulation and budgeting/spending control thereafter; this change led to growth within city boundaries not just within derby but also across Topeka toward what is now known as downtown Topeka proper although most inhabitants still call themselves "derbyites" or "friends & family."

Derby is located on the eastern edge of Johnson County and is bordered to the south by Emporia and to the west by Wichita. The first permanent settlers in Derby were George Wertheimer and his family who arrived in 1847. They built a log cabin on the north side of Round Top Creek. The Wertheimers were among the earliest farmers in Derby. early settlers also included Friedrich Kessler and Wilhelm Pfeifer who came in 1851. The first post office was established at Derby on July 8, 1852. Derby was named for James Derby, an Englishman who helped purchase land near present-day Wichita from General Riley in 1854. A mill was erected here in 1865 by Captain John Satterwhite after he bought property adjacent to Round Top Creek from William Forster east of present-day Emporia. By 1870 there were six businesses operating within one mile of each other in downtown Derby: mercantile store (owned by Jno Ladd), bakery (owned by Geo Maynard), hotel (owned by Capt Ephraim Hogue), blacksmith shop (operated originally by Elijah Clayton but later operated by Rudolph Weiser), wagon works (operated originally as a farm machinery dealership) and grocery store (later known as First American Grocery). In 1916 a new high school was completed east of downtown which added seating for 1,500 students; it burned down two years later while under construction but left standing a large central Drama Hall with three tiers of theaters that could seat 3,000 people apiece during performances such as Gilbertand Sullivan operas or plays produced at Kansas State Fairgrounds nearby; today this building remains structurally active as an attraction off I-435 near Topeka serving primarily educational events such as summer music festivals In addition to its educational institutions, derby has also been called home to many notable residents including: actors Edwin Booth and Katharine Hepburn; writer Will Rogers; physician Drury Lane Theatre Manager Harry Shearer; singer Bing Crosby; model Dorothy Draper; business executive Arthur Asheaway
