Derby, Kansas is a town in Geary County, Kansas, United States. The population was 923 at the 2010 census. Derby was founded in 1881 as a railway stop on the Santa Fe Railroad. It was named for Derby, England. In 1907, the town Post Office changed its name to Derby after becoming an incorporated city. The first settler in Derby were John Coffin and his family who arrived in 1881 from Missouri. The first post office in derby was established on July 10, 1881 by Wm Hovis with the name of "Henderson". On October 2 of that year, a new post office building was built at 124th Ave and Elm St which served until December 15th when it burned down. On January 1st 1890, Pte James Aiken took over operation of the Santa Fe Railway station which he had been running since November 1st 1889 when it reopened following a remodel of the depot by J J Hogan along with raise to grade cattle trails between this station and Wichita Falls TX and point east (present day Overland Park KS). This allowed for passenger train service not just between Wichita Falls TX & points east but also up into central Kansas including all or parts of Decatur (now Overland Park KS), Council Bluffs IA & Omaha NE as well as points west to Topeka & north to Lawrence KC. Passenger trains stopped here en route from Wichita Falls TX to Council Bluffs IA/Omaha NE while goods trains continued onward via present day Topeka – Kearney – Manhattan KS before terminating at Wichita Falls TX or Lubbock TX. In 1907 we see our first true city form when Derby became an incorporated city under laws passed by the state legislature on August 12th 1906 having previously been unincorporated due to lack of government support however much local sentiment remained against incorporation as many felt they would lose their right to vote if they did so while others saw it as an opportunity for growth given that Derby would have more control over its own affairs now that it had representation within government. At this time there were only about 20 residents living in what is now downtown derby although nearing 1000 had settled within what are today eastern part(northwest) of downtown where Main Street meets 6th Avenue originally known as "The Promenade" prior to being renamed "Downtown" during prohibition era 1920s-1930s according kansas statehood process As things began changing around town many businesses closed down or moved out due mainlyto registration fees levied against them by new city hall buildings erected during years following incorporation making downtown mostly one large business district known today simply as "Downtown derby". Many older businesses such as Hudsons Hardware Store remain open today though having lost most if not all their customers during Downtown derby's prohibition era heyday however some newer stores like One Depot Square Shopping Center have made significant progress since then adding music video games consoles etc onto their inventory which can be seen throughout town center near 5th Avenue south main street

In 1831, the towns of Derby and emigrant town were organized as one entity, and in 1836, the name of the city was changed from Derby to Kansas City because of its location at the junction of U.S. Highway 24 and Arkansas River. The population of KC grew rapidly during the late 19th century; by 1907, it had reached over 100,000 residents. The growth of KC led to a number of problems; for example, there was an increase in crime and prostitution in early 20th century KC. However, due to government investments such as public transportation (the first streetcar system was built inKC), education and infrastructure development, KC has since become one of America's most vibrant cities.
