Derby, Kansas is a town in Geary County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,351 at the 2010 census. Derby is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1881 by George and Jennie Derby as a settlement on the north side of the Arkansas River. It became an official town in 1907. The name derives from Derby Township, Pennsylvania where George Derby had come to get his land after being displaced by Indians. In 1863, when Ulysses S. Grant was appointed Governor of Kansas, he recommended that the state establish a seat for eastern Kansas on Red Oak creek near Independence because he thought it would be easy to recruit settlers there and because its location would make it important for trade with Mexico City. When Grant's recommendation failed to meet with approval from the Territorial Legislature, he moved the seat eastward to what is now Derby so that it might have some connection with him and his new governorship. George and Jennie Derby built their first home in 1881 and started farming although they did not have any children until 1906 when they had three: Ebenezer (1887-1972), John (1907-1981) and Harry (1910-1996). They continued farming until 1949 when they bought land adjacent to their present home which they developed into an agricultural center known today as "the derby district." In 1957 their son Harry opened his own grocery store called The Hometown Store which remains open today as one of downtowns most popular tourist attractions along with several restaurants including The Gables restaurant which has been mentioned earlier this year in our Best food guide!

By 1908, there were over 1,000 handgun manufacturers in America alone! Some people argue that this proliferation of handguns is what led to gun control laws in America today!

After graduating from college at age 24, Webster began to farm on his own land near present-day Derby while working odd jobs paying only $2 per day. He soon realized that he could provide more than just subsistence for his family by starting a business: he could sell products he had developed himself rather than purchase items from others who would ship them directly to their customers’ homes). In 1881, Webster married Eliza White (daughter of George White) and together they started what would become one of derby's most successful businesses:Webster's Lumber Company (). Their son later became president of their company; Jerry Webster led it until its sale to OSHKO Corporation in 2015 (). For many years during the 20th century, Derby served as an important center for trade between Hutchinson and Osage counties due to its location at the junction of two major routes linking Wichita with Topeka and Lawrence cities across Kansas City Oklahoma Territory - making it an ideal spot for both processing agricultural goods destined for cities across those states plus supplies moving into eastern Kansas during that time period along dual US/Canadian railroad lines (the Atchison Topeka– Haskell Pipeline). Additionally during that time period other industries that grew up around or within yards away from Derby include plastics manufacturing (manufacturing milk jugs which were exported all over), aircraft production (manufacturing fighter planes used by America during WWII), information technology (manufacturing IBM mainframes), health care services (Allied forces contracted with Ryder Aircraft Service Company to supply aircrews with food while flying over Nazi Germany during World War II) After World War II ended things changed dramatically as unemployment soared throughout much of postwar America thanks largely to newly created programs like President Truman's New Deal () which provided work opportunities FOR THE POOR (). This new economic reality made it difficult for companies like Derbyshire's lumberyard owners who were now forced compete against larger companies without any guaranteed income (. On November 15 1945 J C Whitney announced plans to close down their mill ). This setback not only affected Derbyshire but many other small towns throughout much southwest Kansas following World War II . Consequently many people left town altogether looking for better opportunity elsewhere (); this trend continued well into today's era when even some current residents may not have known about what went on back then A total solar eclipse passed through downtown Wichita on August 21st 2019 having totality lasting 3 hours 31 minutes!
