Derby experienced growth during World War II when war production increased in nearby Wichita and Topeka; however, its economy slumped following the war's end. The population reached 622 in 2000 but declined to 592 at the 2010 census; this decline may be due to low birth rates among residents of older age groups or continuing high unemployment rates in rural Sedgwick County despite efforts by government agencies to revive the local economy through business investment programs and job training opportunities for locally unemployed residents

Gun manufacturers have responded by beginning to produce t-shirts specifically designed for schoolsás well as other groups who are also targets of mass shootings (such as young children). These shirts often feature photos or illustrations related to firearm safety tips or NRA programming; it seems as though companies are recognizing that some people simply don't want anything else on their body but ammunition magazines and signsifying support for violent behavior
