Derby's history began in 1868 when the Pawnee Indian tribe removed their entire village from the area around Derby Creek to an unknown location. The first residents of what is now Derby were farmers and hunters who grew corn, wheat, and other crops. They built their first homes in 1870 and started a school two years later. By 1878, most of the settlers had moved out of the area because of problems with white miners prospecting for coal near Derby creek. In 1881, John A. Funk founded a flour mill in what is now Derby; it became one of the largest flour mills in America and remains in business today. In 1907, Lester Prewitt bought land at present day Elmira on which to build a dam to power his farm irrigation system; he named it after his father-in-law (John A.) Funk Sr.. In 1914–15, during World War I, Derby was used as a military training ground by the US Army Air Forces; afterward it returned to civilian use as an agricultural center. In 1951–52 local businessman Don Weiser developed plans for developing an economic development program called "The Town Project." After several rounds of funding commitments from various sources including foundations and private individuals, Weiser founded The University of Phoenix School of Business Administration in 1957 as part of this program. That same year also saw the opening of nearby Haskell Elementary School (later renamed Haskell Junior High School) which would serve as both its administrative headquarters and primary school until it closed down in 1978 due to budget cuts within then-Johnson County government. In 1965–66 local real estate developer Forrest Ladd designed plans for what is now Downtown Derby; he named it after himself – although no official name was given – because he felt that "Downtown" should be known throughout Johnson County as one place where things were happening rather than just within its own boundaries. One year earlier Ladd had also organized what is still considered to be TheOriginalDerbyFestival which annually features music and art events throughout downtown derby throughout May/June each year since its inception in 1967).
