The first settlers in this area were families from England who came to this region in 1847 as part of the Texas-Mexican War effort. They built log cabins and started farming land that they named Derby after their home town, Derbyshire, England. The first post office was established in 1853, and by 1865 there were six businesses in Derby with a total payroll of $1,500. The first store did not open until 1870 because it was hard to get goods to Derby from Topeka because the railroad didn't exist at that time. The original town had no permanent buildings and functioned as a temporary stop on stagecoach trips between Wichita and Topeka. In 1907, the Brady family donated land to create what is now Derby Square Park in honor of their father-in-law, Daniel Webster Johnson II, who had served as an United States Senator from Massachusetts from 1905 to 1909. The city of Derby was incorporated in 1912, and it has since grown into one of the most populous towns in central Kansas with over 50,000 residents. Derby's rich history can be traced back to its earliest days when it functioned as a stop on stagecoach trips between Wichita and Topeka. On one such trip in 1881, James P. Brady (a future governor of Kansas) stopped at Derby for lunch before continue his journey southward to Topeka. After eating at Brady's restaurant overlooking the Arkansas River, he decided that this would be his new home for the rest of his life - and Derby became known as "The Birthplace Of The Brady Gang." Brady's original townsquare consisted of only two small businesses - a Democratic Party headquarters (now known as the State Capitol) and Mrs. Brady's grocery store - but within three years it had become an important center for local politics and commerce due to its location near both major highways connecting Central Kansas with Wichita and Nebraska City respectively. By 1912 Derby had reached its current size with over 50 residents thanks to its growing reputation as a vibrant community Hub serving nearby villages along the Arkansas River Valley Judiciary Circuit Court House were built during this time including Mrs. Jeffries' Store which still stands today across from State Capitol complex; former Post Office which housed Federal Government officials until 1949 when it was sold to private citizens; Bellefontaine Hotel which operated until 1951; Driscoll Academy which opened in 1915 providing educational opportunities for children living near by while also functioning as a hospital during World War I; First Methodist Church established in 1922 which still functions today as an active religious congregation; Hawarden Nursery & School located adjacent to Bellefontaine Hotel ran until 1978 when it closed after serving students grades K-12 for more than 60 years.; Widmark Chevrolet dealership located adjacent to Hawarden Nursery & School offered car sales services until 1984 when they closed their doors after more than 25 years service.; Finally Gable Ford dealership located adjacent to Widmark Chevrolet offerd car sales services until 1986 when they also closed their doors after more than 25 years service.. An important part of early derby civic life was its annual summer fair which attracted many visitors from surrounding villages including: Topeka (then called Hutchinson), Stroudsburg (then called North Platte), Beattyville (then called Seward), Garden City (then called Emporia), Great Bend (now Lawrence), Jenks Junction National Wildlife Refuge(later named Deer Creek National Wildlife Refuge)), Independence Heights(later renamed Asotin Heights)), Winterset(later renamed Neosho)). In 1916 local businessmen Harry Hightower Jr., Wm Sargent & Bros., J C Dornan & Sons LLP., Rives Brothers Incorporated began supplying foodgrain items directly contracted by US Department Of Agriculture through thenKansas Agricultural Marketing Service under contract number 71095 via wagon train ride from Dodge City down South Canadian Railroad heading east). This wagon train route followed old Santa Fe Trail west then north into Indian Territory before continuing east across present day Oklahoma border into Texas where goods were unloaded at Longview Depot on July 24th 1916 under contract number 82721 (). During these times there were several large scale events taking place all around derby including: first municipal election held April 9th 1920 ($5 per vote); second presidential inauguration held January 20th 1933 $3 per person allowed inside Lincoln Hall (= current Main Street); first tornado outbreak 3/2/1939 targeting Will Rogers Airport <- damage inflicted included destruction or total lossof several buildings-> later that year primary election results announced based on returns received May 14th 1939 ($1 per elector registered + 1 cent fee)... In recent decades various businesses have been established or continued operation within derby including: Vestavia Hills Golf Course (+14 acres leased beginning 2006 season)+6 restaurants (+Restaurant Row+Bakery Row+Golf Club Row+Hospitality Row)); New Beginnings Arena District Park offers basketball games each Friday night featuring top caliber players from around country plus occasional concerts throughout year +=4 soccer teams playing currently indoor stadium next door...
