The first settler in what is now Derby was John Neely who arrived in 1857. Neely's farmstead and outbuildings still stand today on the north side of the city limits. A post office was established in Derby on July 6, 1858, and remained operational until it was discontinued on December 15, 1886. In 1861, Drury Ewing purchased land east of the tracks between present day Northside Avenue and High Street from James Earle for $1 an acre (0.50 km²). He named his tract "Ewing" after his father-in-law; George Ewing had earlier donated land to the town of Garnet City for use as a public square. In 1862, Drury built a log cabin near where he now stands on Northside Avenue to serve as a clinic for local farmers and their animals. In 1865–1866 Jno Griggs erected two sawmills along High Street within about one tenth mile (about eight hundred meters) of Derby proper - these were among the first mills in this locality and remain active today as grain mills managed by Griggs Brothers Grain Incorporated." On November 3rd 1887 Gary Schieffer married Lillie Jane Kline at First Presbyterian Church in Derby after being rejected by other couples that evening because they did not have proper dress uniforms (the only time this has ever happened during my lifetime). To make up for thisck lack of formalities/status quoality during that era many other wedding ceremonies took place such as civil marriage licenses being issued on December 12th 1907 when Mrs Schieffer became Mrs Gary Schieffer with all correct formalities following suit nearly a century later!
