Derby, Kansas is a small town in the US state of Kansas. The population was 1,543 at the 2010 census. Derby is located on the southern border of Johnson County and is bordered by Edwards County to the north, Wyandotte County to the east, and Sumner County to the south. It lies at an elevation of 593 feet (184 m). The first settlers in Derby were Abram Rodgers and his wife Rebecca who landed on December 10th, 1854 from Illinois. They had two children; Abram Jr. and one daughter named Emma who married John Neely. Abram's brother-in-law James Kapp settled in Derby about 1857 with his family and soon started trading goods with other farmers in that area for hides, feathers, etcetera. In 1865 when Abraham died leaving Rebecca four daughters; Fannie (baptized March 4th 1865), Carrie (baptized November 7th 1865), Mayme (baptized December 2nd 1870) & Ida (born February 12th 1872). James Kapp also married Fannie while he lived in Derby so they had six kids total: Edwin Wesley Kapp (November 6th 1893 – September 28th 1984), Agnes Morton Kapp (October 25th 1897 – October 20th 1975), George Washington Kapp (March 14th 1901 – August 30th 1979), Anna Barton Kapp(April 15TH 1903 – ?) & Clyde Edwin "Clyde" Kapp(October 3rd 1905 – June 8TH 1986). In 1907 Sheriff J H Lowe changed the name of Derby from Doniphan to Derby because it was being offered for sale as a post office name change since there were no more residents living there after Amos Rodgers' death on January 24 th 1906 due to yellow fever which struck that area just before he did. On April 1st 1909 when it was renamed again by Governor John P Carey as Derby after A NoBLE member from that town voted yes on changing its name he also made it official adding an 's' to join Doniphan with other towns in Johnson County having similar names such as Seward City, Overland Park, Topeka and Hutchinson before finally giving up that effort five years later because of lack of support from others within the county government especially during local elections which took place every three years at that time so another new name could not be chosen until 1959 when it was finally renamed back to Derby after Mrs.(unknown) Neeley became its first mayor/prime minister/etcetera even though she never lived there long enough to take office seeing as her husband Harry ran for office multiple times but lost each time including once against Judge Royce Lubbock who had been appointed by Governor Carey overruling Mayor Neely's recommendation thus making her the longest serving mayor ever elected or even currently living in this small town although she has now passed away aged 95 year old .
