A fire destroyed most of the town center in 1886, but it re-opened with new stores and a schoolhouse that year. Storeowners George Sperling, Wm Hamer, Chas Matson & Bros., J B McAffee & Sons and others kept up business until 1957 when all businesses closed down due to economic recession. In 1951 Harry Smith started operating an ice cream parlor which continues to operate today as one of CoffEYVILLE's longest running businesses

Coffeyville was a small town in Clay County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2000 census. It is now part of Overland Park, Kansas. The first settler in Coffeyville was John Coffey and his family who arrived in 1854. They were followed by other families over the next few years. In 1857, David Waddell established the first store in Coffeyville and also built the first schoolhouse there. In 1859, Fenton Ewing moved to Coffeyville from Fort Leavenworth and began farming there. He became president of The United States Land Company and donated 640 acres (250 ha) to the town for development. The land included part of what is now Overland Park. In 1865, Isaac Griffen settled in Coffeyville after arriving from Missouri with his wife Eliza and children Lydia and Hiram Jr.. He built a log cabin on land that he had bought from Waddell two years earlier. Griffen became one of CoffeyVILLE’s earliest residents and served as its first mayor from 1865-1867; he also spent many years as a local merchant and folk singer/songwriter during this time period. By 1870, most of what is now Overland Park had been developed including the growth of businesses such as grist mills, breweries, stores etc., which attracted more people to live near them. However, even though Coffeyville had become an important community within its own right it continued to struggle financially until around 1914 when it experienced an influx of new settlers which helped it rebound economically thereafter
Coffeyville was founded in 1854 by Major General James Coffey and his wife, Mrs. Ann Coffey. The town was named for General Coffey's father-in-law, Samuel Coffey. The first post office in the town was established in 1855. In 1860, the community had a population of just over 100 people. By 1865, the population had increased to 350 people and by 1870 it had reached 500 people. The post office closed in 1870 and the town became a village. In 1912, the village merged with neighboring Pawnee City to form the current city of Coffeyville.
