In 1868, Coffeyville was founded by dentist and gunsmith Dr. James A. Coffey and his wife Julia. The first shop in the town was a three-room log cabin on the corner of Seventh and State Streets. In its early days, Coffeyville did not have any handguns but relied instead on trading guns with other settlements in the area for ammunition. In 1892, Dr. John Hite opened a practice in Coffeyville that became one of the most successful dentists in Kansas City until he closed his practice in 1951. In 1902, Wm. Hargrave opened a grocery store at Sixth and State Streets and soon began to importing firearms from England for sale to locals here in Kansas City. This activity led to the nickname “The Arsenal of America” because of this important connection between these two businesses. In 1907, Drs./Msgrs./Dracula Korey & Sons bought out Mr. Hargrave’s share in the grocery store chain and continued to import firearms into Coffeyville under their own name until they closed their business in 1963. At that time, rifles were becoming more popular than handguns so they decided to start manufacturing their own rifles instead of relying only on imported models; this is how softgunCase began! The Coffeyville, Kansas soft gun case history began in 1914 when twelve-year-old Willard W. Harbaugh bought a Winchester Model 6 rifle from his grandfather. The rifle was kept in the family until 1972, when it was sold to an individual and stored away for years. In 1984, the individual decided to sell the rifle and discovered that it had been stored inside a defunct ammunition plant in Coffeyville. After further research, they determined that the ammunition plant had been used as a storage depot for firearms dating back to the 1860s. They also found two rifles inside of the ammo plant - one from 1892 and one from 1916 - which made it clear that these were not historical guns but rather modern weapons seized from old munitions plants. The individuals then contacted Winchester Repeating Arms Company and arranged for them to bring the rifles into their facility so that they could be cleaned and restored to their original condition.
