Coffeyville, Kansas was the location of one of the country's first gun shows. On November 5th, 1892, a largegunshowwasheldin this small town. At that time, shooters had to wear eye protection in order to protect their eyes from debris and accidents. The show continued for several years and it is believed that many of the early shooters who participated in this event were Coffeyville natives. In 1899, a new gun show was held in Coffeyville and again at this location during 1911-1912. At both shows, shooters wore eye protection as required by law. This type of protective gear became known as "the Shooting Glasses." In 1915, a fire destroyed part of the old courthouse in Coffeyville and shooting competitions were moved to nearby Topeka. Because Topeka was an open city with no restrictions on firearms ownership, more shooters attended these events than ever before. It is said that some of today's best shooter are from Coffeyville because they could freely access any ammunition they desired without fear of being arrested or fined for possessing unregistered firearms

In 1931, a hydroelectric power plant was built in Coffeyville and became one of the largest in Kansas. The town continued to grow during the postwar years and by 1970 it had become an official city. After decades of growth and development, CoffEYVILLE has come to be known as one of America's most vibrant cities with a rich history dating back to its founding!
