Coffeyville is a city in Sedalia County, Kansas, United States. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Sedalia County. Coffeyville was founded in 1859 by John Coffey and others as a town on the eastern edge of what is now Sedalia County. In 1870, it moved to its present location on the west side of the Arkansas River. The community name comes from John Coffey's discovery that white oak trees were abundant near his farmstead. The first post office in Coffeyville was established in 1857, and until 1865 it used the designation "Salt Springs". In 1869, when Wichita became a county under Kansas Territory, Coffeyville became its seat. The first railroad reached Coffeyville in 1886; it was built by the Kansas City and Dallas Railroad Company between Topeka and Wichita. At one time or another every major east-west highway enters or crosses through Coffyville: I-635 (Kansas Avenue), US 281 (Kansas Street), US 169 (Jefferson Boulevard), KS 28 (Main Street/US 287) and KS 359 (South Main Street). The city has become known for its large bluebonnet blooms during springtime—the flowers are often seen early morning or evening when they are starting to emerge from their chrysanthemums pots or cages in local gardens. These positive factors have helped keep coffEYVILLE alive over time – even as other communities cropped up around it (e.g., Olathe) or fell into decline (e.g., Topeka).
