In 1907, the Kansas Pacific Railway built a line from Topeka to Coffeyville through the town. This made Coffeyville one of the most important towns on the railroad system. The train depot served as the main passenger stop for many years until it closed in 1970. Today, there is only an occasional freight train passing through Coffeyville and much of what used to be downtown is now residential neighborhoods.

Since then, Coffeyville has seen a number of changes including an increase in population (from 1,500 to 3,000) and a decrease in industry due to competition from other towns within Kansas City metropolitan area. Additionally, the economy has shifted towards service industries such as health care and tourism while still experiencing some significant economic challenges such as high joblessness rates among recent immigrants or those incarcerated at local jails.
