As of 2010, there were 2,500 people living in Coffeyville—2% more than its 2000 census count but 3% less than its2010 population estimate based on land boundaries changes from 2000 through 2010 made by Kansascity county officials under their latest redistricting map released February 1st 2011 - see below for details). The city's population peaked at 4,000 residents in 1945 but declined gradually over the next few decades as out-of-towners increasingly moved into the town while jobs were lost in nearby Topeka. After experiencing rapid growth during World War II due to wartime production opportunities in nearby Wichita and Nazareth (Kansas), Coffeeville experienced a decline during the postwar years as industry came to an end and many workers left for other areas of Kansas or abroad. However, by 1970 Coffeeville had recovered somewhat due to increased tourism and development around its downtown area including new housing developments and a new hospital complex Today coffee village is still growing with more than 8000 people living there with some new subdivisions being added every year
Coffeyville is a town in Riley County, Kansas, United States. The population was 439 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1871 by George Coffey and named for him. It was organized as a townsite on July 1, 1872. The first post office in Coffeyville was established on January 3, 1875. In 1907, the house of James Fenton near the center of town caught fire and burned to the ground; this event is generally considered to be the beginning of Coffeyville's "rust belt" economic development. In 1912–13, construction began on an agriculturaltown complex that would eventually become known as Coffeyville Mall; it opened in 1914. A tornado touched down in Coffeyville on April 17, 1953, killing one person and injuring many others; it is believed to be the most destructivetornado to hit Kansas since 1900.
