In the early 1800s, Coffeyville was a small town in eastern Kansas. It was located on the Missouri River, about 20 miles south of Topeka and 10 miles north of Wichita. The town was named after David Coffey, an entrepreneur who founded a flour mill in 1811. The first tool-making factory in Coffeyville was built in 1836 by John A. Coleman. At that time, tools were made from steel and other materials hand-hammered into shape using adzes, axes, hammers and chisels. These tools were used to cultivate land and build fences and buildings. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), Coffeyville became a key military base for the Union army. Many soldiers stayed here during the war; some even created their own businesses in the town. After the war ended, many of these soldiers returned home and began to rebuild their lives. Coffeyville is a town in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. The population was 711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Wichita Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white person to live in Coffeyville was Nathan Coffey, who settled there in 1867. The first post office in Coffeyville was established in 1868. In 1870, John Pattle founded the Pattle stagecoach line from Topeka to Dodge City and services were carried out by his son Elijah Pattle until 1862 when the route was abandoned because of Indian hostilities near Osage Beach. In 1875, A.L. Beeson organized a railroad from Lawrenceburg to Coffeyville and service began on December 15th of that year with goods being hauled by wagons overland from Lawrenceburg to Hutchinson and then across the Arkansas River by boat to Wichita Falls before finally reaching Coffeyville on July 10th of that year. At this time, it was one of two towns in Sedgwick County without a schoolhouse; the other being Hutchinson which had its own schoolhouse built soon afterward also on the same site (the Hutchison School House now stands as a museum). The first public meeting held in town occurred on January 30th, 1876 when residents met together to discuss ways of improving transportation between Hutchinson and Wichita Falls through an agreement with J M Haggerty who operated a stage line from Dodge City to Wichita Falls carrying passengers and freight over land routes already existing within Sedgwick County limits at that time including Springdale (now Overbrook), Canandaigua (now Council Grove), Anadarko (now Arlington Heights), Elmira (now Ironton), Pittsburg (now Pittsburg Junction), Kankakee (now Topeka) & Winona Lake having been surveyed & laid out prior thereto by Wm Bigham & others….There has been no formal organization or government for either town since then although various committees have been appointed responsible for various aspects of civic life such as building elections laws etc., most notably “The Committee On Roads” which has jurisdiction over all matters pertaining thereto including street paving etc., since its inception…..As recently as 1996 limited postage stamps were issued Denoting special events or commemorative issues related to 100 years since incorporated into Kansas Coffeyville came into existence when Buffalo Bill Cody's show "Cowboy Bill" made its way down Interstate 40 through Kanawha Valley en route to Pawtucket, Rhode Island where he would perform for three weeks beginning November 3rd, 1901 ending December 2nd after traveling 4100 miles non-stop during what proved be his final performance as well as his last official appearance west of Broadway before returning east again on October 5th following many months absence due both health concerns and construction work along I-40 continuing up into Oklahoma Territory However despite this Buffalo Bill era postal history may not reflect what actually happened regarding incorporation/government status given current changes affecting sedgwick county however local citizens did manage hold their very own 6 day celebration honoring him September 5-9th 1999 themed "Buffalo Bill Day - A Celebration Of Our Heritage" featuring major local attractions like rodeo clowns performed by Donny Payne special appearances from entire Cowgirls stable plus refreshments available throughout event facebook page link goes back further
