Coffeyville (population: 9,000) is an agricultural community in Riley County, Kansas, United States. It was founded in 1881 by James Coffey and his wife Eliza. The first post office in Coffeyville was established in 1882. The town was named for General John A. Coffey, who served as U.S. Marshal for the territories of Kansas and Nebraska during the American Civil War. The population of Coffeyville grew rapidly after World War I when millions of soldiers returning from the war found work in the new agriculture settlements near Wichita and Topeka. In 1926, a small mill was built on the outskirts of town to process local wheat into flour and feed local cows; the mill closed in 1961 due to economic problems. The first Holster Manufacturing Company factory opened at 3235 S Main Street in Coffeyville on October 15, 1911; it manufactured handguns for police forces around the world including those used by America's first Central Intelligence Agency officer William Casey during World War II. From its inception until 1970, Colt Firearms produced pistols here including many models that were not exported to other countries until later—including Model 1911s serial number 501-604HW which are still popular collector items today. After Colt Firearms went bankrupt in 1970, production at 3235 S Main Street stopped also; however, all remaining firearms were destroyed when then-owner Bob Goudreau sold his business to Bob Kriegel on January 1st 1978.Bob Kriegel - History of Holsters Kriegel continued manufacture of revolvers under license from Colt Firearms through 1994 with some products being produced right up to present day. Today there are few if any remnants remaining of what once was one of eastern Kansas' most important industrial centers.

In 1909, Alexander Hodge founded an agricultural Implement Manufacturing Company in Coffeyville with his brother-in-law Jesse Wirthleburg. From 1916 to 1919, Hodge served as president of the company. In 1929–30, he also served as mayor of Coffeyville. wheat production increased during World War II due to demand from America's allies; however, due to drought conditions and reductions in price support programs by the US government, wheat prices fell after war ended and limited production resumed in 1949 In 1957 President Dwight D Eisenhower made a speech attacking Briggs & Stratton for using power tools that were harmful to human eyesight which I quote: "Briggs & Stratton has been caught operatives moving their fingers across keys on electric typewriters without any care whatsoever for those keyboards' safety – day and night – putting men's lives at risk." This led Congress to pass legislation requiring all manufacturers of consumer electronics products including consumer printers with certain key presses (the so-called 'Eisenhower press') be certified by a safety official prior to sales
