Coffeyville is located in Geary County, Kansas, and has a population of about 95. It was founded in 1881 by John Coffey and his wife Rebecca. The first gun store in Coffeyville was opened in 1885. In 1903, the town got its own post office. In 1915, it became a city. In 1876, John Fenton came to Coffeyville and began trading goods with the Indians. He built a store on Main Street in 1886. In 1912, J.R. Haughton opened a grocery store at 115 S 4th St., which remains open today as Haughton's Grocery Store & Bakery Ltd.. In 1916, Homer Hinton started farming here and grew corn, wheat, potatoes and other crops; he also operated a general store until he died in 1951. Harry Boynton started operating an ice cream parlor at 9 N First St., which still stands today; it became one of the most popular attractions in town during its time as a commercial center

The town grew rapidly due to its location close to the Kansas- Mexico border and its access to a number of minerals, including silver and gold. The town's growth helped make Coffeyville one of the largest towns in Kansas. In 1907, Coffeyville became the first town in Kansas to be granted city status. In 1916, the Wichita State Normal School opened in Coffeyville and quickly became an important center for education in the area. The town also developed a strong economy thanks to its status as a transportation hub and its importance as a manufacturing center for items such as textiles, shoes, cars, food products, etc.
