It is believed that they may have been derived from an ancient Buddhist scripture known as The Sutra of the Noble Eightfold Path (Sutra V). Dating back to around 600 BC, this text has a section on how to use a crossbow. In it, it is mentioned that one can use either left or right-handed rifles to shoot arrows with ease. Shortly after this, gun swivels may have first been used in warfare. Swivels were initially used as stocks on rifles in order to rotate them so that the user could reload more quickly. This allowed for faster battles and also helped prevent weapon failures due to jams. As time passed, different devices were developed in order to improve upon the function of gun swivels. These devices included buttstocks and stocks with circles or lines indicating which way was up when looking down the barrel. Eventually, these devices became known as “gun risers” or “gunners” because they rotated the stock in order for the user to aim better.
