The town was platted in 1871 by J. W. Coffey and named for him. Coffeyville became a railroad town in 1902 and a post office was established there in 1903. The first store in Coffeyville was built on the east side of the tracks adjacent to the present day schoolhouse. The original post office building still stands, used as a library until 1978 and now used as a private residence. The first store west of Main Street served as an ammunition supplier for local militia during World War I before moving to its present location on West Main Street in 1925 when it became one of only two stores remaining in that section of town after purchases by other businesses led to its closure several years earlier. In 1951, when Geary County merged with Ford County, Coffeyville remained within Ford County but changed its name to Coffeyville-Geary Center due to lack of support from central government officials for a new name change effort within Geary County itself prior to that county's creation). In 1984, remnants of an old cotton gin were discovered near the current site of the high school which had been destroyed by fire some years earlier while being used as an agricultural research center run by Wichita State University; funding came from Friends Of The Earth USA who later restored and opened it as their Park Avenue headquarters with exhibits on natural gas drilling methods employed during oil production seasons; today it is also home to Wichita State University's Museum Of Science And Industry CoffEYVILLE! However, coffee continued to be an important commodity for local farmers during this time; between 1916 and 1918%, more than half of all beans grown in Topeka County were used for coffee production alone. The post-war period saw another growth spurt for Coffeyville – due to both new industry developments (textile mills popping up around that time) as well as increasing demand from Wichita residents for their products. By 1951, there were over 100 residents living in Coffeyville; by 1990 only 10 remained8). In recent years however Coffeevillians have slowly started disappearing one by one – most likely due to various factors including poverty and lack of job opportunities outside of agriculture8).
