Coffeyville, Kansas is a small town located in the Wichita metropolitan area. The population was 2,829 at the 2010 census. Coffeyville is considered a small town because it has only one elementary school and one high school which serve the entire community. The mayor is Tom Hickey who was first elected in 2002. The history of Coffeyville began with two families that came to Kansas from Illinois in 1854. Harry Coffey and his wife Anna were the first people to live in what is now Coffeyville. They founded a log cabin on what is now known as Hillcrest Drive. Harry Coffey died young and his wife continued to live there until her death in 1902. She was buried in the family cemetery behind their home. In 1907, John Witherspoon moved to Coffeyville from Topeka, KS and opened a grocery store called The Witherspoon Store on Main Street which became the nucleus of today's coffEYVILLE community center complex on East Third Street near Center Avenue. Mrs. Witherspoon enjoyed spending summers at her grandson's home on East Fourth Street next to her store where she entertained visitors during their visitations which continue to this day! By 1920, three grocery stores had been opened - The Fenton Grocery Store (now part of Walmart), The Hearn Store (now Anheuser-Busch) and The Kress Store (now Albertsons). In 1923, PTA No 1 was organized in CoffEYVILLE by Mr./Mrs./Drs./Patty Ryan who are still active today as its original founders! A post office was established at CoffEYVILLE in 1925 and remained open until 1959 when it closed due to lack of mail volume! Today there are just two remaining buildings left from when our Post Office operated - THE COWBOY BARN & GRILL on West First Street across from Central Park Elementary School and THE PO BOX ON Second Avenue across from Elmira High School - all built between 1951-1957! In 1961, local resident Glen Dowling purchased 4 acres of land north of current day Highway 620 for $300 which he donated to the town for use as an agricultural extension service lot!. Today we enjoy beautiful views of downtown Wichita while still using this property for our Extension Services Department headquarters! In 1971 Clifford Jarrell became our first Mayor after being elected Commissioner of Schools!! In 1984 Glen Dowling passed away leaving behind four children he had married while living in Wichita; Kathy, Dougherty (Doris), Teresa & Timmy!!! On July 1st OF THIS YEAR Glen's youngest son Timmy became our 3rd Mayor having been elected unopposed!!! Timothy Jarrell currently serves as Town Manager!! It was first mentioned in the Greek historian, Homer, in the Iliad Book XVIII, where Achilles mentions that his mother's father had a oil lamp with which he lubricated his sword. The modern era of gun lubrication began with the development of carbide-tipped spark plugs in the early 1800s. Carbide spark plugs were used to improve fuel efficiency by preventing stalling during combustion. The use of carbide sparks also eliminated any need for film or grease on pistons and valves, making maintenance much easier and reducing wear on components. One of the first applications of oil to firearms was as a preventer against seized breeches and other parts in 1892 when Adolphus cartridge manufacturers developed an improved version of their popular #2 percussion cap primer using an all-carbon propellant that would not seize if it became wet outside. This new type of primer required no film or grease to operate, greatly facilitating cleaning and maintainability. In 1903, Winchester introduced its Model 80 shotgun which featured a smoothbore design with a bore size larger than most rifle barrels. The large bore made it possible to use higher quality lead shot than could be fired from traditional 12 gauge shotguns. To reduce fouling caused by small particles released during firing such as lead balls, Winchester introduced a special type of chamber (the overloading chamber) for its Model 80 shotgun that usedarger case pressure than standard chambers used in other models such as the .22 LR revolver. This increased case pressure resulted in smallerParticles being ejected from muzzle energy creating less noise when fired compared to traditional guns chambered for softball calibers such as .22 LR). In order to provide greater reliability under high velocity loads - especially those designed for hunting big game - Winchester replaced some key elements common to earlier shotgun designs including checkering on stocks and trigger guards with metal work instead

In 1907, the town had a population of 438 and it changed its name to Coffeyville-Edwardsburg in honor of Edwin Edwards, one of its founders. The town has been shrinking ever since and currently has a population of 603.
Coffeyville was founded in 1854 by George Coffey and his wife, Rachel. It was named after General John A. Coffey, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as a U.S. Senator from Kansas. The town developed around the local mill, which produced flour, cottonseed oil, cheese, eggs and other agricultural products. Coffeyville was also home to a small school and a few stores before it went out of business in the 1960s.
