Coffeyville is a small town located in Clay County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Coffeyville was founded in 1881 by A.J. Coffey and named for him. It became a city in 1925 and had a total population of 34,342 at the 2000 census. The community is home to the K-12 school district and the Coffeyville Municipal Airport. The first settler in what would become Coffeyville was A.J. Coffey, who arrived in 1881 from Ohio with his family. He built a log cabin on what is now Cemetery Road (now US 421) and named it for himself – "Coffeyville". The first crop grown here was corn, which remained our mainstay until wheat became available around 1900 or so; however, other crops such as beans and squash were also cultivated here for many years thereafter! In 1925, when Wichita Falls merged into Oklahoma City through annexation, it resulted in the addition of Clay County to that city's boundaries; nonetheless, most people continued to call their hometown "CoffEYVILLE" even after Wichita Falls largely adopted its new name! In recent years there have been several attempts made to move the downtown core of Coffeyville towards an inner ring road encircling the small town – all without success alas! But despite this setback some redevelopment has occurred over the past few years with retail businesses moving into formerly vacant storefronts while new homes are being erected on older sites throughout town – making it quite an active place indeed!
