His father, John Sr., also settled in Cowley County and operated a sawmill there until his death in 1834. Another early settler was James Hargrave, who arrived about 1839 and built a store on the present site of the City Hall building. Hargrave also opened up a post office at Coffeyville soon after its establishment. In 1854, John CoffEY moved from Greencastle, Indiana to Cowley County to find land for himself andhis family; he established the town of CoffEYVILLE on February 1st (1854). The original land grant for this community was 3 miles square with 5 lots: one lot north of the creek on which it stands, one lot east of said creek on an upland ridge overlooking Indian Creek valley below; one lot south of Indian Creek on high ground near Mount Carmel Cemetery; two lots west side of Indian Creek between Blossommount Cemetery and Heron Hill Cemetery].
