Coffeyville is a small town in Coffey County, Kansas, United States. It was settled in 1854 by refugees from the Fertile Crescent during the Mormon War. The first post office was established in 1855, and the first store was built in 1860. The population was 981 at the 2000 census. The Coffeyville Ammunition Plant began operations in 1925 as one of three plants operated by Armour & Co., which became Colt Industries in 1929. The plant manufactured M1 Garands, M2 Carbines, Thompson Submachine Guns and other firearms until its closure in 2007. In 2010 the town turned over ownership of the plant to Kansas State University for research and educational purposes. Today, remnants of the original ammunition factory can be seen on Main Street across from US 71/USA 6 west of Coffeyville's downtown core. A plaque on an old building near US 71 commemorates Armour's involvement with Coffeyville: "Armour & Co.'s munitions plant at Coffeyville - 1915-2007".

In 1907, it became a part of Sedgwick County. The current name of the town comes from Daniel Coffey's daughter Maudie who named it after her father's home county (England). Coffeyville has been called "The Florence of the West" because of its well-preserved historical buildings and landmarks dating back to early settlement days including a Log Cabin Hotel which operated from 1906 to 1912; Second Baptist Church built in 1896 on Railroad land donated by Samuel Clements; and the original Carnegie Library which opened on November 15, 1904. In 1909, Wichita Township merged with Sedgwick County to form what is now Wichita–Hutchinson metropolitan area
The town of Coffeyville, Kansas was founded by Daniel Coffey in 1857. The town was named for General John A. Coffey who fought in the Mexican-American War. The first courthouse in the town was built in 1858 and it served as a local government center until 1906 when it was replaced by the current courthouse. The town also had a school system which operated from 1858 to 1907. In 1905, the town became an independent city and its governments continued to be run by city officials until 1959 when they were transferred to the Coffeyville City Council. The population of Coffeyville increased rapidly after World War II and by 1960 it had reached over 10,000 people. After years of growth, the economic structure of thetown began to change in the late 1990s and 2000s with a decline in manufacturing jobs while there has been an increase in servicessector jobs.
