Coffeyville is a small town located in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. The population was 785 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. Coffeyville was founded in 1881 by farmers who moved from Missouri to escape the cotton-picking season. The first post office was established in 1882. In 1896, the name of the town changed from Indianola to Coffeyville after A. G. Coffey, a Democrat from nearby Topeka who served as mayor and as an important factor in creating Wichita's city limits. Coffeyville has been home to two colleges: Coffeyville Community College and Wichita State University since its establishment in 1963. The community college offers associate degrees and certificates; Wichita State offers bachelor's degrees and graduate degrees in arts, sciences, engineering, business/commerce, law-enforcement/judicial services, health science/medical assisting and education/further learning programs. In 1837, George Stephenson developed the first practical steam engine that could produce motive power for vehicles, and he used this engine to build the Liverpool-Manchester Railway. This railway was built with heavy artillery pieces that needed to be hauled around by horses, and Stephenson realized that he could use his new engine to transport these pieces of equipment in an enclosed vehicle. He named this vehicle the “Railroad Engine” because it ran on air. In 1851, John Fenton developed a gas powered airgun that became known as the Fenton Rifle. This rifle was designed to fire shot with a muzzle velocity of 350 meters per second (1,000 feet per second). This high speed allowed soldiers and other military personnel to shoot at very close range without fear of hitting their allies or themselves. The popularity of this rifle led John Fenton to develop another type of firearm called the Gatling Gun. The Gatling Gun is one of the most infamous weapons in history because it was used during World War II to kill millions of people from both sides of the conflict. The Gatling Gun was created by British inventor George Stephenson in 1868 and itfired rounds at up to 100 kilometers (60 miles) per minute (30 miles per hour). The Gatling Gun were so successful that they were eventually replaced by more powerful guns such as the M1 Garand rifles and machine guns during World War II.

Coffeyville was founded in 1854 by James Coffey and his wife, Martha. The community was located on the eastern edge of Dodge County, Kansas, about 25 miles northeast of Topeka. Coffeyville prospered as a small town until the discovery of oil in 1901 led to its rapid growth. In 1916, Coffeyville became an incorporated city and has continued to grow ever since. The history of Coffeyville is intertwined with that of Topeka and Dodge County. When settlers first arrived in Kansas Territory, they were looking for a place to build their homes and farms because there was no room available on the prairies outside of Wichita. At first, these pioneers lucked out because the area where they lived was rich in coal and oil deposits. However, when the US government bought land in what is now Dodge County for $10 per acre in 1854, things changed quickly for the settlers at Coffeyville. Because this land had been claimed by other tribes before European settlement began, many new residents had trouble getting official recognition from their governments as landowners. This status quo persisted until 1861 when a group of surveyors discovered oil reserves near Coffeyville – one of the earliest commercial operations in Kansas Territory! This sudden wealth led to an immediate boom for Coffeyville. builders erected cottages and frame houses throughout the town center; schools were established; businesses opened; etcetera. By 1861, even though it still lacked formal recognition from local authorities, CoffEYVILLE had become one of Kansas’ most important towns! Nevertheless, despite its prosperity during this early period (and due largely to its location), little attention was paid to Duffields Hill until after World War I brought increased demand for goods coming from abroad (primarily England). Asportation (the transportation industry) assumed greater importance than production withinKansas during this time period- resulting in Duffields Hill declining relative to other large towns across America such as Wichita and Des Moines (which also experienced rapid growth during this era). However, unlike other towns which slowly regained lost ground over time – Duffields Hill actually stalled economically during Prohibition- experiencing significant declines both socially and economically throughout much of 1920s & 1930sdue primarily to high unemployment rates withinKansas cities & rural areas consequent upon prohibition (& general economic recession nationally). Finally however following repeal & returnof open liquor laws by state legislature – Duffields Hill recovered somewhat economically thru Continued investment/employment opportunities among recent arrivals who returned home post-Prohibition -although still below pre-Prohibition levels

The town's population rapidly grew during the early years of the 20th century, due to its location on a major transportation route and its strategic position as an agricultural center. Coffeyville experienced some growth setbacks during World War II, when it was used as a training camp for soldiers from other local towns. However, the town generally recovered after the war and reached its peak in population around 1960. By 2000, however, Coffeyville's population had decreased significantly due to dramatic reductions in agriculture activity and recent suburban sprawl that has encroached on its boundaries.
