Atchison, Kansas is the home of The Atchison Telescope Company and one of the earliest optical manufacturers in America. The company was founded in 1879 by two brothers, George W. Atchison and John H. Atchison, and produced a wide variety of optics including binoculars, telescopes, microscope slides, photo prints, and microscopes. In fact, many of the products that we use today were originally developed at The Atchison Telescope Company. The company was sold to Sylvania Instruments in 1936 and eventually merged with Zenith Instruments in 1957 to form Zenith-Atchison Instrument Corporation (ZAI). ZAI continued to produce optics until it closed its doors in 1984. However, some of their products still survive today such as their Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope which is currently on display at The Smithsonian National Museum of American History in Washington D.C. It is interesting to note that even though ZAI ceased production all those years ago, their legacy remains very much alive within the optics industry as many modern companies continue to produce products based off their designs or concepts!

In 1870, Section 2 (now southeast corner) of downtown was planned as a commercial district with three blocks long centered around First National Bank building – but this plan failed due to lack of funding and opposition from local business interests who saw their competition as unchecked white monopoly power. A new plan submitted by planner Alfred Burt called for a two-block wide commercial district bounded by Seventh Avenue eastward to Market Street westward; this proposal also failed due to opposition from local businesses who wanted their own section within the city limits In 1875–76 changes were made to the city charter which gave increased Mayorial Authority and allowed Foraker County farmers (the majority of whom lived near Independence) greater control over City government finances and services – this arrangement continued until 1907 when Foraker County residents started seceding from AtchISON over disagreements about municipal spending priorities In 1909 plans were developed forrenaming downtown Ashtonshire after Scottish explorer Sir James Kennedy Forbes – but these plans met with resistance from some community members who felt that Forbes name would be inappropriate given that he had not actually settled in Atchison proper
