Atchison, Kansas is the most populous city in the U.S. state of Kansas and the county seat of Atchison County. The population was 563,711 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Missouri River in southern KS, just east of Topeka and west of Wichita. The city is named after General George Armstrong Custer who fought during the American Civil War and died there in 1876. The first settlers to what would become Atchison were farmers who came from eastern Illinois in 1854. They founded a town on an artificial island formed by building a channel across the Missouri River where it joined the river near present-day Topeka. This settlement was called "Atchison" because its founders had received instruction from Colonel James Ketchum about how to liquidate Indian populations without harming them. The first post office was established in 1856, and Atchison grew rapidly thanks to heavy trade with surrounding counties as well as shipments of goods brought overland by stagecoaches from St Louis and other points northward. By 1870, AtchISON had reached its current size with 1,500 residents; it had also adopted a new name: "Topeka". During this time period, railroads continued to arrive throughout KS., making transportation much more efficient than it had been before (and opening up new markets for goods). In 1881, Topeka became one of three cities within KS.(the others being Wichita and Manhattan) when Lawrence County was created; Topeka became an incorporated municipality effective November 29th that year. With railroad transport becoming more available and efficient (and better able to handle large numbers of people), Atchison began experiencing rapid growth – reaching 2,000 residents by 1900! However, World War I quickly interrupted all this progressivism: businesses closed down or were taken over by military forces; unemployment soared as soldiers return home unable or unwilling to find civilian jobs; prices for goods increased significantly due to shortages caused by wartime rationing; nonetheless, despite these setbacks, By 1920s AtchISON's population had grown again past 30000 inhabitants! This growth continued into the 1930s when airport development started taking hold beginning with Wichita International Airport which opened on December 15th 1930 just north of downtown On September 30th 1938 Mayor John Tunnell unveiled his vision for creating a world-renowned art museum adjacent to Wichita State University– which eventually became known as Brown University following a gift from industrialist Edward Brown Jr.. In 1879, the first practical optical instrument was created by Italian scientist Giovanni Battista Volta. Volta's device consisted of a small prismatic lens and an objective lens connected by a thin tube. The object of the lens was placed in front of the prism while light waves were passed through it, causing different colors to be seen depending on their incidence angle. This invention allowed for the observation of faint objects because they could now be discriminated from more brightly illuminated surroundings. In 1886, American chemist Theodore Roosevelt designed and built the first true reflecting telescope, which he named "Mount Wilson". Reflecting telescopes became increasingly important in scientific research because they could provide images with much greater resolution than previous instruments. However, reflectors required large amounts of expensive glass and metalwork to achieve optimum performance; this caused difficulties for amateur astronomers who couldn't afford such equipment. Reflectors were later replaced by new types of optics such as Fresnel lenses and dichroic mirrors that allow light waves to pass through any number of directions simultaneously without interference

Atchison, Kansas is a city in the U.S. state of Kansas, located in the Atchison County seat of Dodge City. The population was 83,569 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest city in Kansas and one of its ten most populous cities. It is also the largest city in Topeka County. The first permanent settler in Atchison was John Brown who arrived on July 24, 1847. The town began as a small trading post on an armory hill overlooking Dodge City. In 1871, It became an incorporated municipality with a population of 5,000 people under the name "Atchison". The first mayor was Wm Henson and later Jno Pogue served from 1870 to 1895. On August 15, 1907 a tornado struck Wichita and caused widespread damage including $1 million in property loss; Atchison sustained no damage however 20% of its housing stock was destroyed or damaged with over 100 stores and businesses being total losses). In 1960 Kansascity reported that Atchison had lost out to Wichita as "the fastest-growing city" (Kansascity article). By 2000 Kansascity's report said that Wichita had overtaken Atchison as the top city for economic growth within Topeka County - but by 2010 both cities still hold strong ties to their histories: "Both cities continue to maintain close relationships with their predecessor towns - each retains important cultural artifacts from those times and continues to enjoy significant economic development."
