Atchison, Kansas is a town in the U.S. state of Kansas. The population was 1,435 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area and is included in the Topeka–Laramie metro area. Atchison was founded by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway in 1881 as a cattle station on its main line between Topeka and Manhattan Beach. In 1865, when Lawrence, Kansas became a city, Atchison was its first incorporated town. In 1907 it merged with Santa Fe City to form the current city-county of Wichita. Prior to this merger, Atchison had two separate towns: One located east of downtown on Haskell Street known as North Side; and another located west of downtown on South Side which became known as East Side after it merged with West Side in 1907. After annexation by Wichita in 1912, Northside split into two parts again: North side continued as an independent community until 1938 when it joined the annexed city; while East Side joined Wichita permanently within five years thereafter becoming called Downtown or Historic District No 2 (H2). Downtown has been home to many businesses like Sears Department Store (now Kmart) which opened its doors there in 1911 and still operates today until present day; First National Bank Of America which operated from 1914-1998; J&R Steakhouse which opened its doors on Broadwaynmace Street adjacent to now's Quiznos restaurant; The Pabst Brewery Corporation built their first brewing plant adjacent to Downtown near Wahoo's Pizza Place before moving their operations across State highways 101 & 169 into what is now Midtown mall; Wells Fargo bank also relocated from Northwest Plaza across State highway 169 next door to Quiznos restaurant into what is now called "The Park" building at 14th Street & Grand Avenue beginning operations in 1959 before eventually moving out again following the huge concentration of banks within one location caused by deregulation during the 1990s – all prior operations were conducted inside "The Park". Now that most major developments have taken place outside of Downtown/Historic District 2 since annexation by Wichita occurred more than 50 years ago - much has changed for residents & businesses associated with those districts! Some significant landmarks still extant from pre- annexation days include Pabst Brewery Corporation brewery complex just northeast corner Wahoo's Pizza Place Rd.; Masonic Temple Building currently housing Bankers Life Insurance Company - original structure built 1875 remains intact (& active); First National Bank Of America building originally constructed 1913 remains standing (& active); Wellesley Hotel property once occupied by Armour Candies also extant (& active).

Atchison, Kansas (1937-present) is a city in the U.S. state of Kansas and the county seat of Dodge County. The population was 997 at the 2010 census, making it the 11th most populous city in Kansas. The railroad town at Atchison was founded by settlers in 1854 and became a center for industry and trade after opening up new land west of Topeka in 1865. The townsite name "Atchison" is from French Canadian explorer Pierre Chouteau'sgiven name Achille meaning "place where goods are bought." In 1907, Atchison became an incorporated city with a Mayor-Council form of government under which it remains today. A local variant of this form is known as a unicameral or one-house municipality because all members are elected at large rather than through districts or wards like many American cities have become over time. A large amount of early Atchison history can be found on the Atchison Historical Society website which includes articles, photos, maps and more dating back to 1854 when settlers first arrived in what would become Atchison. One such article discusses how during the Mexican–American War (1846-48), General George Armstrong Custer's Seventh Cavalry used Atchison as their winter quarters as they campaigned through Indian Country searching for Indians who had surrendered to Mexico instead of fighting against Ulysses S Grant's army on their own behalf. Aftermath of that conflict saw many civilian buildings destroyed by Indian attackers including Fort Hays & its gunpowder store which operated out side town until 1886 when federal troops moved into position inside the fort to protect civilians from possible attack. During World War II, Atchision served as a major ground transportation hub for Army troops moving between points east and west along I-80; It also served as an air refueling stop for bombers travelling over Wichita area en route to drop bombs on Japan during that war while also housing processing plants associated with munitions production during peacetime times; Today much attention is given to downtown redevelopment operations with plans underway to expand/ renovation several historic district buildings within walking distance complete or near completion across several blocks surrounding downtown areas including Main Street Park Blocks east & southbound; As recently built neighborhoods continue to grow closer along First Avenue West they will likely come into contact with these redevelopments eventually providing some level of collision but overall development has been positive since WWII due largely to efforts by locals& organizations spearheaded by Mayor Greg Stanton
