Atchison, Kansas is a city in and the county seat of Atchison County, Kansas, United States. The population was 156 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Missouri River in south-central Kansas. The first permanent settlements in what is now Atchison County were made by westerners who prospected for oil and coal in the area during the 1870s. In 1881, Atchison was founded as a town by railroad men to facilitate transportation between Wichita, Topeka and Santa Fe Springs, Colorado. The town was named after Edwin C. Atchison, president of the Wichita & Santa Fe Railway. In 1862 when Major General John Pope sued over an disputed claim to land east of present day Lawrence, KS for which he had been awarded $1 million dollars (USD) by President Abraham Lincoln as part of his Emancipation Proclamation; he enlisted help from Samuel Tappan to bring about justice on his behalf from local farmers who ranched thereabouts; these men organized themselves into a "Provisional Grand Jury" that met at Indianola on November 11th and 12th 1863 under jurist James Hennepin. On December 16th they issued their report exonerating Pope but finding that all other claimants were guilty of fraud or bad faith with regards to their claims including those of Captain Jacob Riis who claimed 1/4 mile (0.8 km) along both banks of the Arkansas River). Atchison, Kansas is a city in the US state of Kansas. The population was 597 at the 2010 census. Atchison was founded in 1854 by John H. Atchison and became a county Seat in 1861. It was renamed Topeka in 1907, and then Hutchinson in 1909. In 1912, it merged with Topeka County to form Shawnee County. The growth of Wichita led to the merger as well. The first post office opened at Atchison on November 1, 1854, and the town rapidly grew into a thriving community center for the surrounding agricultural areas.Shortly after its founding, Atchison experienced an economic boom due to its key role as a transportation hub for goods arriving from westward via Nebraska and Iowa Railroad systems and for shipments coming eastward over the Missouri River on steamboats. By 1860, Atchison had become one of central Kansas' most important towns with a population of 2,500 residents and had built up an extensive infrastructure including two hotels (one called the "Atchiisons", now known as One Oklahoma City Center), several churches (including one established by Horace Mann), three Masonic lodges (the first being erected near present-day First National Bank building), twenty-six schools (twenty-one elementary schools, six high schools, four industrial academies) and thirty-eight businesses In 1861 On March 4th , territorial Governor James Guthrie ordered all female citizens between eighteen years old and sixty years old to leave Topeka because he felt that their presence would distract from military preparations for war with Mexico; this order effectively shut down AtchISON's downtown business district which quickly deteriorated into lawlessness On July 14th 1863 Union General Sterling Price issued orders that all males between 19 years old and 45 must be registered with local militia organizations or face destruction or arrest; many men ignored this order rather than register which led to increased violence within the city In 1864 when Topeka received its own government under territorial governor Pinchot's leadership it began developing plans for expanding its educational system beyond primary grades so that students could progress through secondary school into college preparatory programs; however this effort met heavy resistance from local businessmen who saw higher education as incompatible with their operations - after surveying Andover Academy they recommended instead setting up what is today Wichita State University When Republican Ulysses S Grant became President of America in 1868 he vowed to uphold Republican Party principles including social welfare programs such as free universal suffrage throughout America; during his first term he enacted legislation creating public universities across America which would open up opportunities for women ; although initially opposed by some business leaders who saw these institutions as competition they eventually came around to supporting them However despite these advances at home political instability continued to plague America during Grant's second term culminating in his impeachment trial which ended unsuccessfully on May 10th 1870
