Although they had no formal education or training, the Davenport brothers were very knowledgeable about agriculture and government affairs. Their experience as farmers allowed them to develop strong relationships with both local officials and other settlers in Kansas City (later renamed Kansas City). This relationship helped make Atchison one of the most respected cities in west Texas during the 1850s- 1860s period! In1854, when Missouri Statehood was proposed by President James Kossuth, many people within atchyon voted against it because they believed that Missouri would be part of Kentucky instead! Despite this vote defeat, residents of Atchison continued to celebrate their statehood by wearing blue jeans! WhenKansas entered Union Party control after Abraham Lincoln was elected president on November 4th, 1864 (overcompensating for his Southern sympathies), all laws pertaining to liquor were repealed effective January 1st 1865! This event is generally consideredthe beginning of Prohibition Era in America! After World War I ended on August 14th 1919 (due largely to American entry into World War I), prices for goods high enough for sale without alcohol began becoming available again throughout most of America on October 15th 1919!!! In spite of this legal progressivism , some Americans still resisted Prohibition efforts throughout much of 1920-1925!!! However , By 1925 all but two States had banned liquor altogether !!!!

It became an agricultural center, and in 1907 Atchison became the first city in Kansas to have a municipal water system.
