Aggies (a.k.a. the Wildcats) were a professional American football team that played in Atchison, Kansas from 1903 to 1907. The team was formed by two teams of students at the Topeka High School and first played their games against each other in 1903. In 1904, they joined the Topeka Football League, which was then the top level of American football. They finished second in their league campaign but went on to win the league championship in 1905. They also lost the 1906 title game to Chicago Pee Wee Tomeans, who had previously won that year's championship game. The Wildcats also made it to four consecutive conference championships (1905–08) before losing out to eventual NFL champions Baltimore Colts in 1908. In 1909, they folded due to lack of players and resources; however, this does not mean that Atchison did not have a significant amount of football history over these years as several other
Atchison, Kansas was founded on October 16, 1847, by the merger of two settlements: Atchison and Topeka. The town quickly grew into an important commercial center in the region, becoming known for its many flour mills and cattle drives. In addition to its significance as a commercial center, Atchison also became a central location for political activity in the area during the late 1800s. In 1858, Atchison was designated as the capital of Kansas under the Missouri Compromise. This designation helped to solidify local support for slavery while at the same time preserving at least some degree of autonomy for the towns within Kansas.
