A major manufacturer of locomotives in America during the 1920s and 1930s, Harvey Wacker also located an operations facility in Atchison during that time period; it closed down in 2006 but remains vacant today. The current incarnation of Atchison began to form around 1940 with the opening of a new post office by Harold Ziegler. In that year, Ziegler donated land adjacent to his home to establish what would become downtown Atchison; he named it after himself and his wife Alma (née Hall). The first stores opened within months of each other on Main Street between First Avenue and Richards Street; these were housed in two frame buildings which still stand today: one facing east on Richards Street across from Municipal Court Annexe No 2 and another facing south on First Avenue near Park Square Shopping Center.
