Atchison, Kansas is a city in the U.S. state of Kansas and the county seat of Atchison County. The population was 3,531 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Arkansas River in central Kansas. The first settlement at Atchison was made by ferrymen from Topeka on the Missouri River in 1854. In 1861, when Kansas became a United States territory, Atchison was one of the original ten towns set apart for that purpose. In 1867, it became an incorporated city with a population of 521 people. The city boundaries were enlarged in 1907 to include all of Dawson County and part of Wichita County. The population reached 10,000 by 1960 and 21,000 by 1990; however, growth has slowed since then due to suburban development and other changes within and outside the city limits. Apaton had a cotton gin erected in 1865 which remains in use today as Atchison's only commercial facility operated by a civic organization (the Cotton Gin Museum). The Girdwood Coal Company established its coal mine near townrantsville along Clay Creek in 1875; this mine continued operations until 1963 when it closed because of environmental problems associated with low-quality coal mined thereabouts dyeing water blue under high pressure from acid mine drainage deposits beneath the surface water table). In 1902–3 John Wesley Powell visited Atchison while exploring western Oklahoma Territory for USGS Surveyor General James Henson; he left notes about his visit here which have been studied by later archaeologists.. The first post office at Atchision was established on December 12th, 1868 (by act of Congress) under the name "Topeka". It moved to its present site on November 15th 1911 following approval from President William McKinley who called it "a most important station on our railroad system". Ulysses S Grant visited AtchISON during his final months as president in 1879 while campaigning for election to succeed Franklin D Roosevelt as Ulysses S Grant's Vice President (). After being inaugurated as president he traveled through much of America including stops at Topeka and vicinity before arriving here on February 9th 1880…… He attended services held at First Baptist Church …He also inspected some new bridges over Arkansas River just west of town
