Atchison, Kansas is a town in and the county seat of Atchison County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,545 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1867 by farmers from nearby Topeka. In 1907, Atchison became the first city in what is now Kansas to be incorporated as a municipality. A post office called Atchison was established in 1867, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. TheTown of Atchison was organized on October 12, 1907 by act of the Legislature. As per its charter written by Mayor John P. Hickey: "The purpose of this incorporation shall be to promote manufactures within our limits and to provide for public education." In 1912 Democrat James MurchISON won re-election as mayor with 54% of the vote defeating Republican incumbent Reuben LANDis by only 2%. His opponent said he got only 45% because some voters who had previously voted for him did not show up at the polls that day or didn't have their ballots counted. After his election victory MurchISON disbanded city government and appointed himself mayor with full power over municipal affairs including law enforcement and budgeting; an arrangement which continued until 1917 when internal conflict between MurchISON's administration and the city's council led to a permanent split within City Hall; MurchISON losing all mayoral powers except emergency authority to run emergency services while still having exclusive control over police functions. In 1917 City Manager George Aiken merged into City Hall creating a single executive body responsible solely for all aspects of municipal government including finances and law enforcement while retaining separate governing councils each representing areas other than downtown business districts - these governance structures remain present today as part of local government structure throughout most of Kansas
In 1854, the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad was built from Kansas City to Wichita. The railroad helped spur the growth of Wichita and the surrounding area. In 1907, Wichita was incorporated as a city.
