When a group of men from Arkansas City, Kansas decided to start a business selling flashlights in the early 1920s, they were following in the footsteps of others who had earlier introduced this type of product to the area. The men who founded these businesses were all highly experienced flashlight manufacturers and traders who had learned about and used firearms to sell their products. One of the first sales events took place on September 12, 1922, when a group of men from Arkansas City came together to sell flashlights at the Kansas State Fairgrounds. In 1861, when Confederate forces invaded the United States, Arkansas City was one of the towns within the Confederate-controlled area of Wichita County, Kansas. On July 14th, 1861, 3 soldiers from Arkansas City went into Wichita County to purchase some supplies for their home town before they joined the Confederacy and fought against Union troops under General Abraham Lincoln during the American Civil War.
Arkansas City, Kansas is a city in Riley County, Kansas, United States. The population was 3,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. Arkansas City is located on the Arkansas River and has a humid continental climate. The first permanent settler in what would become Arkansas City was John Henniker in 1854. He built a log cabin on the banks of the river near present day United States Highway 54. A post office called Henniker was established in 1857 and remained open until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1865, James Fenton organized what would become Riley County as part of Lawrence County which he had just won from Shawnee Indian Territory. In 1867, he donated land to build an courthouse and jail on East Main Street which served as county seat for 11 years before being moved to Oklahoma City where it remains today. In 1902, Charles Waddell purchased land east of town along US-54 to create what became known as Waddell Ranch which still stands today across from US- 54 south of town (just north of present day Walnut Ridge). Waddell operated a cattle ranch that supplied feed for local farmers until his death in 1943. He is buried there alongside his wife Harriet and their children Charlie and Nettie Waddell (later Headlee). It wasn't until after World War II that Arkansas City began experiencing growth due to its proximity to Wichita and Kansas State University (KSU). In 1954, KSU merged with Wichita State University creating one large university with many campuses throughout the state of Kansas including KSU's campus in Hutchinson which housed the college preparatory school then known as Topeka High School when it opened in 1955 beside KSU's main campus. As cities grew larger they started developing their own economies with various agencies providing services such as fire protection, police service etc.. This led to organizations like Kiwanis Club/American Legion Post #541 forming sports teams both men’s varsity & women’s varsity lacrosse & softball teams while businesses such as convenience stores & gas stations started popping up all around town giving notice that this small community had potential for major growth if only someone would take note! And so it did! By 1959-1960 we had our very own Chamber Of Commerce - “The Arkansaw Valley Chamber Of Commerce” - dedicated solely to promoting business development within our wonderful community! We were able to attract not only local businesses but also out-of-state companies who also wanted access to Wichita’s growing economy! Our businessmen quickly realized that this great opportunity couldn't be left unfulfilled; so they came up with an idea - Why not have an Art Show? What could be more popular than art? They went ahead with it regardless of how much people criticized them – They knew better than anyone else how important art was!! And so began The Arkansaw Valley Art Fair Inc., now one of KS' most popular cultural events enjoyed by everyone concerned!
