By 1860, Arkansas City had a population of about 50 people. The town was renamed Kansas City after the state's capital, Topeka, in 1861. In 1865, Kansas City became the site of the largest slave market in America when it became known as "the black market for slaves." It also served as a center for slave trade and human trafficking throughout its history. In 1868, angry residents looted and burned down what remained of Kansas City's Commercial Street. In 1870, Arkansas City developed into a railroad junction with Topeka. This allowed goods and passengers to be transported between the two cities easily and made it an important commercial center during this time period. The railroads also helped to spur economic development within Arkansas City while simultaneously providing jobs for locals. In 1893, Main Street was renamed Boulevard following city wide renaming efforts initiated by Mayor Hennenbeck. During World War II, ArkansasCity experienced some significant growth due to its proximity to military bases being located within the city limits ( such as Fort Riley).
