Arkansas City, Kansas is a town in Kansa County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1857 by John L. Bowen and named for Arkansas City, Texas. The first settlers were farmers who came to the area from Illinois in 1847. In 1870, J.C. Hays became the first postmaster in Arkansas City when he moved from Topeka to take up the post of mail carrier for the new town. With its own school and courthouse built between 1871 and 1875, Arkansas City quickly grew into one of the most significant settlements in early Kansas Territory. In 1886, Arkansas City annexed portions of nearby Leavenworth County (later called Wichita County). This move allowed Arkansas City to become an integral part of Wichita County and protect its position as an important agricultural center during what was known as Wichita Boom times. By 1900, however,Arkansas City's economic decline had begun; it had only 3 residents living in 100 businesses listed on the city's register of trade pits-the fewest anytown in Kansas had ever registered at that time-and it failed to regain its former importance until 1945 when Wichita Countys merged with Johnson County to form present day Kansas Citations District No 4
