Arkansas City, Kansas is a city in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. The population was 7,723 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city within Sedgwick County and the third-most populous city in Kansas after Wichita and Lawrence. Arkansas City is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The first people to settle in this area were the Lenape Indians who had moved from Canada to what is now northeastern Pennsylvania around 1700. They were followed by other tribes such as the Shawnees, Potawatomi and O’odham who also settled hereabouts about 1800. In 1854, when Abraham Lincoln was elected President of the United States, he made a speech in which he urged Congress to appropriate $10,000 for Illinoisans to be set aside in Sedgwick County for buildin' schools and theological seminaries if they could be found thereabouts. As a result of this speech and others like it given during his administration, many families removed to Arkansas City where they began their new lives as farmers or ranchers. One of the largest employers in town today is Motorola Solutions Inc., one of America's leading technology companies with more than 100 locations across North America including Arkansas City. In recent years too there has been an increase in development taking place both inside town limits (real estate) as well as outside town limits along I-435/I-670 which forms much of its eastern border. This corridor has seen a number of highrise buildings being built just east of I-435 near US Highway 24 while another large development taking place west on I-670 near US Highway 55 offers excellent access to Interstate 70 traffic throughout town while still allowing plenty of room for growth without impacting traffic flow on either highway

The militia eventually surrendered to Union forces at the Battle of Pea Ridge. After the war ended, Arkansas City quickly resumed its former status as a commercial center. In 1868 it became the capital of Kansas, and during this time it experienced some of its most dramatic changes. For one thing, business activity began to increase dramatically due to new transportation technologies such as railroads and canals. also in 1868 saw the opening of the first African American school in Americas history when John Aither opened his School for Colored People in Arkansas City. In 1898 ArkansasCity was renamed Wichita after Wichita Falls Texas which had been destroyed by fire just two years earlier
