The first firearms in Arkansas City, Kansas were handguns. A store called the "Gunsmith" first sold pistols and revolvers in 1876. The pistol industry started booming in the late 1800s and early 1900s, thanks to advancements in firearms technology. In 1907, the first rifle was permit-fired in Arkansas City. From 1909 to 1912, there was a shooting contest held at the local high school that featured rifles from various manufacturers. In 1916, the city began leasing land from the Haskell County seat of Garnet for a municipal arms depot and gun range. The depot served as both a storage facility and training ground for local shooters until it was destroyed by fire in 1951.

In 1907, Dodge & Company bought Meadowcroft from Smedley's heirs and developed it into what is now downtown Arkansas City with office buildings on four blocks across three streets from each other along Main Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue North (later renamed Seventh Avenue). Dodge & Company remained predominant throughout much of downtown development until they were replaced by American National Corporation in 1954 which then left downtown redevelopment largely uninfluenced by later corporate entities which have persisted into modern times despite multiple fires that have destroyed portions or allofthebuildingsto date The arrival of automobiles placed high demand on local transportation options beginning around 1910 although streetcar service continued until 1966 primarily because access to land beyond town limits made trucking more practical given larger distances between destinations while still allowing pedestrians/bicycles access onto main thoroughfares inside town limits In 1925-1926 construction began on what would becomeKansas State University across Main Street from Second Avenue North (later renamed Seventh Avenue). As such Hutchinson became known as "Topeka Junction Railway Station" while Cedar Rapids became " Council Bluffs".
