As of the census of 2000, there were 7,174 people, 2,966 households, and 2,298 families residing in the city limits; however these figures may rise or drop due to non-census changes due to annexation or other moves by citizens into adjacent areas since then including portions of Topeka outside the city limits but within its legal boundaries as well as portions annexed from Garden Grove outside Topeka proper but within its boundaries as well as portions annexed from Wichita Falls outside Wichita Falls proper but within its boundaries as well as portions annexed from Olathe outside Olathe proper but within its legal boundaries making it an official urban agglomeration with a population count exceeding 10 thousand for only two years out of thirteen years such an aggregation would have a more accurate figure because it includes all those living within incorporated borders plus any portion annexed from another municipality without notification or vote by residents

Arkansas City is a city in Geary County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,693 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. Arkansas City was founded in 1855 as a small settlement on the James River by Major John C. Smith and his brother-in-law Captain Daniel Boone. The original site of Arkansas City was along present day US Highway 20, just south of its current incarnation as an intersection of Rogers Road and US Highway 16. In 1882, the town prospered when it became the terminus of the Union Pacific Railroad's Great Western Railway line between Wichita and Topeka. In 1909, Arkansas City became home to the first full-time high school in Geary County when Harlan Central High School opened. In 1933, an election resulted in passage of Orville Freeman's "Fair Housing Act" which outlawed discrimination against African Americans in housing decisions made by local businesses and organizations. This law remains effective to this day and forms one of the city's primary attractions; many local businesses still refuse to sell products or services to people based on their race or ethnicity (though some have since softened their stance). As Arkansas City grew more prosperous through new industrial development and tourism growth, white flight began to occur from town; however black residents continued to reside within the city limits until after integration efforts were terminated by order of Mayor Freeman in 1957 following public protestations from community members themselves. During World War II,Arkansas City played host to naval training exercises with ships moored at nearby Mounds Bayou before being evacuated for fear that they would be sunk in wartime shipping traffic around Wichita Lake - this never happened but did cause some problems for locals who had grown used to living close enough to warships that they could smell them if they got too close). The post-war years saw increasing commercial activity across town including several large stores anchors Kmart Supercenter etc., while also seeing increased levels of gun violence due largely to turf wars between various gangs related specifically thereto such as 'The Sons Of Liberty' & 'The Black Belt Boys'. In 1951, however, Arkansas City experienced another boom when construction began on the interstate highway system. This growth led to new businesses being established in the city and helped it become a major cultural center around which many events are held each year such as summer festivals and music festivals
