Arkansas City, Kansas is a small city in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. The population was 549 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Sedgwick County. The first settler in Arkansas City was Johnnie Davis in 1855. He and his family built a log cabin on what is now Main Street. The town was platted in 1867 by John Hargrave and its name change to Arkansas City after the state of Arkansas became a United States territory following the Mexican-American War (1846-48). Arkansas City's first school was built on present day Elmwood Avenue in 1870. It served as the only school until 1911 when it moved to its current location on State Street. In 1906, the Haskell Brothers opened the first gas station west of Wichita Falls, Texas and started selling oil products from their store at 1st and Main Streets in Arkansas City. In 1940, a tornado touched down near Arkansas City and destroyed much of downtown including both schools and businesses; however, most damage occurred to homes across Elmwood Avenue which were flattened with such force that many trees still stand today. The town experienced another devastating tornado outbreak on May 3rd & 4th 1988 which caused extensive damage all across downtown including most notably destroying many homes along Elmwood Avenue as well as several blocks of east side streets between First Street and Third Street which remain unaltered to this day. This storm also left two dead inside one home due to direct injuries sustained during ensuing winds gusts up to 100 mph(160 km/h).
