Arkansas City, Kansas is a small town in the US state of Kansas. It is located in western Shawnee County and is the county seat of Shawnee County. The population was 3,937 at the 2010 census. By 1870, it had a population of 10 people and by 1880 it had reached 20 people; it peaked at 30 in 1910 with a population of 507 people. During World War II, Arkansas City was one of many towns within Shawnee County that were key nodes in providing military supplies to war effort across Missouri andKansas. The local Manufacturing Company made radios for military use which were used by both Allied troops fighting Nazi Germany as well as US forces fighting Japan during World War II; these wartime activities helped make Arkansas City one of America's most important industrial Towns during those years (and still are today). When Interstate 70 was created through Missouri in 1971, part of its path crossed over into Shawnee County; this caused an increase in traffic congestion around downtown Arkansas City which led to some proposed solutions such as widening I-70 or building more expressways; however no decisions were ever made about either option until after 9/11 when plans for an expansion allowance for I-70 eastward across Topeka into ShawneeCounty emerged due to increased terror threats against that city from Al Qaeda sympathizers operating out there (the original proposal included extending I-70 all the way to Wichita Falls). Ultimately however only expressways were built -largely due to cost overruns associated with expanding I-270 into Shawnee County - and now large portions of downtown are without access despite promises from highway officials that “The city will be accessible by light rail” if needed (it has not happened yet).

However, because of its close proximity to Wichita metropolitan area and its strong industrial base, Arkansas City slowly regained some popularity in the late 1930s and 1940s as a center for commerce. In the 1980s and 1990s however, Arkansas City experienced significant growth as a result of new development around it including an indoor arena and a new high school which opened in 2002. Today, ArkansasCity is one of Kansas' fastest-growing cities with a population over 20K residents
