Gun security history in Arkansas City, Kansas can be traced back to the early 1800s. In 1827, James Hite began purchasing land in what is now Arkansas City. His original home was built on the current site of First Baptist Church. Hite was a surveyor and had a rifle that he used to protect himself from Indians. By 1829, Hite had two stores and four homes in the town. In 1854, John Witherspoon opened his first store in what is now downtown Arkansas City. Witherspoon was a speculator and bought goods at low prices to sell later at high prices. He also imported guns from England and France. In 1865, John Ainsworth opened his second store in downtown Arkansas City. Ainsworth was an attorney who represented several towns in nearby Riley County. He also supplied arms to the local militia during the Civil War. The town of Arkansas City grew rapidly during the late 19th century and by 1907 there were twelve businesses in the community with a population of over 1,500 people! The growth of the city led to more gun shops opening up throughout central Kansas including one located on Main Street which still operates today! The city also saw an increase in crime as criminals began moving into central Kansas looking for opportunities for profit! Gun security became a top priority for officials as they worked to keep citizens safe from crime while Protecting property values! In 1969, Wichita Eagle reporter Gary Webb wrote an article about how American political leaders were using their positions to help armedy dealers across Central America through Operation Condor! This story sparked outrage around the world and helped lead to Congress outlawinggun sales within our borders! Gun security has since become one of my favorite topics because it is so important for both individual safety and economic stability!

The first settler to come to Arkansas City was Alexander Fenton in 1868. He and his family came from what is now Virginia Beach, Virginia. They set up a farm north of the present day Arkansas City interchange on the Missouri River. Fenton named their new town for General Andrew Johnson since he had recently become President of the United States. The first mayor of the town was A.J. Shields who served from 1881 to 1889. Shields also served as treasurer for both Dodge County and Kansascity Township which made him one of the most influential men in early Arkansas City when it came to politics and governing styles. In 1907, Shields helped organize what is now Wichita County which then included parts of Dodge County as well as other towns such as Topeka and Osborne Springs on the Missouri River near present day Wichita Falls, Texas (the county seat). This led to Wichita County becoming one of the most political jurisdictions within Kansas during that time period - much like neighboring Topeka today where KCK has long been an important city center with its own commercial district paralleling Main Street downtown
