This merger created a new company named National Shooting Sports Foundation which still publishes ammunition products today under their legacy name of Winchester Ammunition Co., Inc.. Arkansas City is a city in Southern Kansas, United States. It was founded in 1867 by the merger of two small towns, Arkansas and Park. The population was 30,044 at the 2010 census. The namesake of Arkansas City is not known with certainty, but it is most likely that it is derived from the French words "Arke" meaning rock and "City" meaning town or village. The first settler to arrive in what would become Arkansas City was James Fenton who arrived on July 1, 1867. He named his new settlement for General Samuel J. Banks III who had been mortally wounded in a skirmish near Fort Smith three weeks earlier. In 1870, the citizens of Little Rock petitioned for incorporation as a city and were granted this request on December 10th by Territorial Governor James Ketchum. On January 8th 1870, Arkansas City became the 36th municipality in Kansas Territory when it merged with Park to form the new city limits. In 1907, following annexation of much of neighboring farmland by Little Rock, Arkansas City's population peaked at 47,000 people before gradually declining over ensuing decades due to various demographic factors such as migration away from rural areas and loss of jobs in nearby cities and towns through development projects such as oil refineries and shopping malls statewide. Today, its population stands at 30,044 according to the 2010 census
